Are Increased Earthquakes a Sign of the End?
“For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and in various places there will be famines and earthquakes (Matthew 24:7)”
Jesus told His disciples the signs that would mark His Second Coming. He foretold wars, earthquakes, famines, etc., but He was quick to add the following:
“But all these things are merely the beginning of birth pangs (Matthew 24:8).”
Labor Has Begun!
Earthquakes have happened and will continue to happen until Jesus returns at His Second Coming. Yet there does seem to be an increase in these birth pains. In one day (4/26/15-4/27/15), there were 185 earthquakes in the world. Now this number includes minor and major earthquakes, but the fact that the earth is shaking this much should tell us something.
Take for example a woman’s labor. It begins slowly, then progresses till the contractions are right on top of each other. That seems to be where we are now. In one part of the world there is a devastating earthquake (Nepal 4/15), while another part of the world witnesses a large volcanic eruption (Chile 4/15); and still another part of the world endures bloodshed (Yemen & 10 Arab nations 4/15). Without a doubt, we are witnessing earth’s “labor pains.” Almost two thousand years ago, the following words were penned and ring truer now than ever before:
“For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now (Romans 8:20)”
What is all of creation suffering from and groaning for?
Well, a two part question deserves a two part answer:
1. First, all creation has been under the curse of sin since the first man and woman ate from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good & Evil:
But from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die (Genesis 3:3).
a.) Mankind was not supposed to die, but sin & disobedience brought the curse of physical death. In the very beginning of creation, humans lived for centuries, but they eventually did die, and none made it to the millennial mark. Adam, the first man, lived to be 930 years old, and one of his descendants, a man named Methuselah, lived to be 969 years old! Nowadays our lives have been cut short tremendously compared to early humans. Even with our great medical advances, living past 100 years old is rare. Eating from the wrong tree brought death, and all of creation suffers the consequences of our ancestors’ actions.
Then to Adam He (God) said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it;’ Cursed is the ground because of you. In toil you will eat of it all the days of your life (Genesis 3:17).
b.) The earth was supposed to flourish like the Garden of Eden, but sin brought death to human life, animal life, and even to plant life! If you are a farmer, you will definitely understand how difficult bringing in a harvest can be. Yet, it wasn’t supposed to be this way.
2.) Secondly, all creation is groaning for the curse to be lifted! Eventually this will happen:
There will no longer be any curse; and the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and His bond-servants will serve Him (Revelation 22:3).
a.) The earth wants the curse to be lifted as much as we do! Think about this. If you make a special promise to your child, that little person will hound you until you fulfill what you said you would do. Like a child, the earth is now having a wild temper tantrum. You can most definitely expect earthquakes and volcanic activity to increase in the coming days, weeks, months, or years as the earth anxiously awaits the promise of King Jesus’s Second Coming and the earth’s return to perfection!
b.) Bible believing Christians are also groaning for the curse of sin to be lifted. We desperately want an end to wars, famines, violence, abortion, sin, and even death. Many are now coming out of their slumber and crying out for the promise of the Righteous Rule & Reign of King Jesus.
As we approach the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, earthquakes will continue and will even grow worse. Overcomer, we must suffer and groan a little longer, but keep looking up. Jesus is coming soon.
